Chelton is looking for a Datalink Terminal Engineer to develop a robust solution suitable for use in both naval and air environments, as part of a major Electronic Warfare Training Programme. Your role will be to specify custom and COTS equipment, including integration of the terminal on to naval vessels, including support future trials. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team, as well as colleagues in ILS and supply chain, to deliver this element of the solution.

This is a permanent, full time position based at our offices in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. SL7. 

Responsibilities

  • Review of shipborne terminal requirements, including decomposition of requirements from use cases and high-level requirements to derive equipment level technical specifications.
  • Work with key suppliers and technical and engineering leads to identify solutions that meet functional requirements and mitigate the impact of electromagnetic interference. Guided by the engineering and technical leads, model and determine suitable test environments to optimise and test the datalink performance in representative electromagnetic environments.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders on frequency planning.
  • Work with mechanical engineering to scope and implement custom packaging of COTS components for ship datalink terminal that meets the requirements.
  • Support engagement with suppliers, including identification of cost effective COTS and custom solutions, as appropriate.
  • Work with the customer and other key stakeholders to review the acceptability of the ship datalink terminal.
  • Provide support to the project manager in terms of technical, schedule and cost inputs, as part of project planning updates.
  • Lead assessments to determine compatibility of the solution to applicable standards and provide inputs to ILS to support human factors, reliability and spares considerations.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and mitigation planning.

Skills and Experience

  • Good communication skills and demonstrable experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team.
  • Sound systems engineering experience across lifecycle (from requirements capture to design, verification and production), including support to design and test readiness reviews.
  • Ability to interface with internal and external customers/stakeholders.
  • You are likely to have a science or engineering degree, supported by significant engineering lifecycle experience.

It would be advantageous if you had:

  • Experience in naval environments.
  • Knowledge of datalinks and AECT-500.
  • Experience of writing engineering requirement documents (ERDs).
  • Appreciation of Human Factors and Ergonomics for design of naval systems.
  • Previous experience in Electronic Warfare domain.
