This role will be based at our Head Office in Marlow.

Your skills and experience:

As a Principal Software Engineer your responsibilities will include taking leadership for software solutions and acting as a design authority to coordinate the technical activities of future development. You'll take ownership and responsibility of key components and support the implementation of design review practices.

As a Principal Software Engineer your skills and qualifications will ideally include:

  • Proven record of leading software projects to deliver successful outcomes on time and within budget
  • Experience of managing a team based in different geographical locations
  • Wide range of experience with and knowledge of mission critical systems
  • Demonstrable experience working directly with customers
  • Solid understanding of software development life-cycles, processes and methodologies, including software configuration management
  • Exceptional planning and organisational skills
  • Behavioural: self-starting, adaptable, problem solving and able to motivate other
  • Familiarity with the product lifecycle from system requirements, architecture, design, integration, qualification, verification, through to production and support
  • Highly experienced in developing production software ideally for one or more of the following: radar, electronic warfare, communications and / or surveillance systems for an airborne environment
  • Expertise in design, coding, debugging, reviewing and testing software
  • Extensive experience of C++ software development
  • Experience with Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server
  • An understanding of Configuration Management and Quality Assurance principles
  • Problem solving and creativity
  • Self-motivated, confident and assertive
  • Initiative and drive
  • Ability to learn new software languages and adapt to other operating environments
  • Good team player with ability to work in self-organised teams
  • The ability to work within a large organization in a matrix management structure
  • Experience of agile development methods preferably scrum
  • Strong technical report writing and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with engineering processes, practices and measures of performance for the discipline
  • Ability to obtain a SC Security Clearance
  • Experience of developing software for Windows and Linux
  • Experience of implementing networking solutions including knowledge of TCP networking

As a Principal Software Engineer your key responsibilities will include:

  • Safety first. Operate in accordance with the SHE standards. Identify where the SHE Standards are applicable to appointed operations/tasks and apply safe systems of work
  • Application of discipline domain knowledge to the design, development and test of software components on time, within budget and with required quality
  • Take technical leadership for software solutions
  • Take ownership and responsibility of key components
  • Act as design authority and coordinate the technical activities of feature development
  • Peer review of software
  • Produce the documentation required to support the software
  • Produce estimates, plans and progress reports
  • Provide support to the projects, systems and operations teams
  • Any other duties that are reasonably requested by management within the capability of the engineer
  • Liaise with customers to provide support
  • Continued development of discipline competence and expertise
  • Application of, and compliance with, engineering processes and practices including engineering framework, LCM and regulatory requirements
  • Identification of opportunities for the improvement of processes, practices and tools
  • Collaboration with other project team members to analyse and address project requirements
  • Collaboration with discipline peers within the team, BU and company to share and learn best practice
  • Support the implementation of design review practice in accordance with LCM project governance
  • Identify and document as needed our intellectual property such as trade secrets, patents and controlled information
  • Contribute to business winning technical proposals
